Associate Professor - Chancellor's Chair for Excellence(070251)

Description:
The University of Missouri, College of Education, is pleased to announce the establishment of a Chancellor’s Chair in Literacy Education. This position, supported by the Chancellor’s Fund for Excellence, is designed for an established scholar. This individual will have opportunities to collaborate with a variety of exceptional program areas within the college, including Literacy Education, School Psychology, Educational Psychology, Special Education and Information Science, The goal for this position is developing a strong, nationally and internationally prominent research program in the area of literacy.

In addition to exceptional programs and faculty in the aforementioned areas, the College is home to the MU Partnership for Educational Renewal, providing an excellent infrastructure for public school connections including the participation of 23 schools districts (urban, suburban and rural districts), the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, and our Regional Professional Development Center. This provides outstanding opportunities for collaborative research activity.

The College of Education is seeking an established scholar in the area of literacy education to fill this position. We seek applicants who have a proven track record of engaging in high quality scholarship, including extramural funding, that address the literacy needs of typically developing and at-risk children pre-K through 6th grade. Applicants across all related disciplines, including Educational Psychology, Special Education as well as traditional Curriculum and Instruction are encouraged to apply. This is a nine-month Associate/Full Professor tenure line position with the possibility of supplementary summer employment. Responsibilities/Duties:
Engage in a program of high-quality research and related scholarly activities, including the pursuit of significant, externally-funded projects. Teach graduate courses in reading and literacy education. Advise, supervise, and mentor graduate students. Collaborate with colleagues across the College of Education, other departments on campus, and Pre-K-12 schools to develop innovative teaching, research and outreach programs. Provide leadership within the College of Education among literacy and related faculty, doctoral students, research associates, and post-doctoral fellows.

Qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate in literacy education or a related field with an emphasis in literacy.
  • Strong knowledge and demonstration of empirical research, in particular quantitative methodology.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate significant external funding through grants and contracts.
  • Demonstrated scholarly accomplishments including research publications and presentations.
  • Current knowledge of assessment and intervention for effectively addressing reading difficulties at the elementary level through a multi-disciplinary perspective.
  • Successful teaching experience within public schools and/or University level.
  • Demonstrated record/potential to achieve national and international recognition based on scholarship.

MU is the oldest state university west of the Mississippi River and the largest of the four institutions in the University of Missouri System. MU is located in Columbia, a community of approximately 100,000, rated as one of the best small cities in the US by Money magazine. MU has an enrollment of approximately 28000, and is designated as Doctoral/Research Extensive by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The College of Education is one of 18 schools/colleges on campus, has a student population of 1,200 undergraduates and 1,500 gradate students, and a tenure/tenure-track faculty of 90 members. Salary and Start Date:
Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. Appointment begins Fall Semester 2008.
