School of Journalism:

INFORMATION GRAPHICS EDITOR/ASSISTANT PROFESSOR PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE (060169)

Position:
You know that information graphics are crucial for any modern news product worthy of the name.

You know how shallow the pool of talented professionals with the ability to create such graphics.

Why not consider a job that lets you help the industry address both issues? You’ll oversee information graphics at a cutting-edge print and online news product while introducing a new generation of students to the skills and theories of the field.

The Missouri School of Journalism has such a position. You’ll teach a class and use its students as your staff to produce infographics for our web site and daily community newspaper. The Columbia Missourian is edited by professionals and staffed by students from our classes. And, as a bonus, we’re one of the few two-newspaper towns left, so the competition will keep you moving.

You’ll be in charge of the infographics and work closely with other visual and word editors. Remember all those exciting things you want to do when YOU are graphics chief? Now you can.

Columbia, Missouri, is a vibrant, sophisticated college town halfway between Kansas City and St. Louis. Several national magazines have ranked it as one of the country’s best places to live.

And Missourian graphics, as well as its entire product, compete successfully against the region’s biggest metros. Our work also regularly takes top prizes in SND competitions.

This is a chance not just to teach, but to learn. Previous people in this position have simultaneously earned master’s degrees. Some Missourian editors have even earned PhD’s.

This is a chance to grow, to stretch, to influence not just one paper but the entire information graphics industry.

Specific Requirements:
Excellent technical and computer skills are essential, including expert knowledge of FreeHand/Illustrator, PhotoShop and InDesign. ArcView and 3D skills would be an added bonus. Design experience is also a big plus. Time management skills will also come in handy. Master's degree preferred (though not required). ). Experience in a daily news environment is also highly desirable.
